One hundred and fourteen names of Thorne servicemen who gave their lives in the conflict were read out as candles were floated on the duck pond that surrounds the memorial.

The following evening during Squadron night the cadets learned about relatives who fought in the First World War,  life in the trenches,  war posters and the early aircraft used during the conflict.
